So, Sunday night, I watched the Golden Globes for the first time (Hey, don't judge, I'm German and they air it live, so that means I watched from 2 am - 5 am; and I had to go to college at 8), but anyway, I was kinda disappointed. Last fall, I watched the Emmys and I liked them so much I thought: Well, there's TV at the Golden Globes and there will be some major movie stars and maybe there will be a better host than those five reality hosts (Ok, I should of course root for Heidi Klum, but she's as annoying in English as in German, so she didn't help) and everything will be a little bit more glamorous.
But somehow it was all very messy and just not what I expected. I of course loved the people there. Patrick Dempsey, Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein (and the whole cast of House; although they were only on screen for only half a minute total), some other movie stars I like etc., and I guess it's supposed to be casual: The stars are sitting together and talk and then they get some awards, bla bla bla, but for me it was just messy:

- Categories. Ok, first of all: Why is this an award for movies and TV shows and then TV movies? Is this really necessary? We've got the Oscars for movies, the Emmys for TV shows and what's left? Well, what about an award for good TV movies? Or just TV movies and TV shows? Or Movies and TV Movies? Wouldn't that be much simpler. And then you wouldn't completely lose track if they were presenting "Best supporting actress TV series drama" and then "Best actor Movie Drama" and then God knows what.
- Host. I don't know if they usually have one but they really, really need a host. Get someone on stage who says: "Hello, welcome to the 66th Golden Globe awards." And then some short, friendly words and the first presenter can come on stage. The background voice was presenting the actors, why don't we see a nice face just every half hour, saying something nice, introducing someone, etc. But most importantly: Say hello and Goodbye! Please. You can't start a show with: "Here's Jennifer Lopez"..."Good Evening, the nominees for best supporting actress..." It's too fast. And you can't end it with someone still rambling on stage. Cut some awards if you don't have time!
- The presentation of awards. Again, I think it was supposed to be casual, but how lazy is the director? When they show a nominee, I think they should at least subtitle it with the actor's/actress' name. Is it so hard to write "Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road" under her picture? I mean, the Emmy's can, why can't they? And for God's sake: Provide a picture of the nominees which are not attending. It's pretty confusing if someone says, I don't know, Hugh Laurie and the presenter is shown. Come on, not everyone knows every actor, do they? I was most disappointed when they ran out of time and the category "Best TV series Drama", which House was nominated for, was just read like you would read a grocery list and neither the cast nor a little video was shown.
- The seating area. Do something about this seating situation. the people need too long to get to the stage and they almost fall over other peoples dresses or chairs. That's what takes so long. How about little paths where people can walk. Ok, it's cosy and they can talk, but come on, it looks as if it's a prom.
- Motivation. Was it just me, or were most actors extremely bored? I loved the acceptance speeches, but when they were presenting, by God, could they be less enthusiastic? I don's really know what to do about that, but something has to be done.
- Media. Work with little videos, little pictures, split screens. I know it's live, but the Oscars and the Emmys are able to do split screens with four or five nominees. And there were almost no videos. I'm no expert on release dates in America, but most films haven't aired yet, I guess. How are we supposed to know, how the movie they made looked, if they show so few videos.
- TV. "Hi, we're TV actors". The guy was right, they're under-represented at the awards. If I remember right, there was no footage shown of any show. Are we supposed to know each show, just by name? I haven't seen Mad Men, I haven't seen True Blood, how am I supposed to know how they look.
That's pretty much it. Of course, I also liked it because I've never seen this many stars in one place and some acceptance speeches were great, the Steven Spielberg montage was great, too, although nobody really said what his award was called. I just know now, that I won't be staying up next year for the Golden Globes, only for the Emmys. maybe if a lot of my favourite shows and actors are nominated for the Golden Globes. But unless that's the case, I'm going to sleep 7 hours and not only 2,5 as on Sunday night...
Current Mood: Kinda mad
