Couples Countdown Nr.1

Monica & Chandler
(Friends)

Current status: Married, with twins Jack and Erica
The Beginning: Monica and Chandler have been best friends for some time. When Monica's brother Ross gets married in London and a lady asks if Monica is Ross's mother, she's very depressed and Chandler and she sleep with each other.
Course of the Relationship: For some time, Chandler and Monica sleep with each other, just for fun and because they realize that they're attracted to each other. Little by little, their friends discover their secret and bothof them realize that they love each other. They almost get married in Las Vegas, but after they see Ross and Rachel really get married they decide to move in together first. Because Chandler is afraid of commitment, Monica proposes and they get married one year later. They try to get pregnant for a while, but it turns out that they can't conceive naturally. After battling Chandler's unemployment, they find a woman who will give them their child.
The End & Future: The woman gives birth to twins, Erika and Jack, and Chandler and Monica move out of town in their own house, ending the show.

When I fell in love with them: I liked them when they were "just" friends, but as soon as they hooked up I was absolutely in love with their relationship.
Why I like them: For me, they symbolize a very real couple. Chandler is afraid of comittment, Monica can be a total control freak but they make it work because they love each other. They have amazing chemistry and undergo a wonderful journey together. Much more steady than Ross and Rachel.
Best Moment: In my all-time favourite episode "TOW everyone finds out" Chandler admits that he loves Monica after Phoebe, who knows about them, tries to seduce him.
Saddest Moment: I felt so bad for them when they found out that they weren't able to conceive a baby naturally because Monica wanted to have children all the time and I thought this was a very sad moment.

Why Nr.1? It's the perfect ship: It's romantic, they have chemistry, they are perfect for each other. Period.
Miscellaneous: This is propably one of my first "real" ship as Friends is my all-time favourite show and I used to watch it all the time. I still do, but I have other shows I love, too. Although I love Ross and Rachel, too, I always liked this couple better because they somehow seem more real.

Couples Countdown Nr.5

Rachel & Ross
(Friends)

Current status: Together, finally…
The Beginning: Ross has had a crush on Rachel for nine years, when they met again. Ross fell in love again, but when Rachel found out, he had already moved on.
Course of the Relationship: Rachel was jealous of Ross's new girlfriends and when she was drunk, she told him how she felt. They kissed but then got in a fight. Eventually they became a couple for about a year. When Rachel got a new job, Ross got jealous of her collegue Mark. After a fight, they took a break and Ross slept with another woman, resulting in a horrible breakup. They try to make it work once again, but when Rachel asks Ross to take full responsibility for their failing relationship, it doesn't succeed. They move on and Ross wants to get married to Emily but says Rachel's name at the althar. He gets a divorce, but stays friends with Rachel. They kiss when Monica gets engaged and shortly before Monica and Chandler's wedding, they have sex and Rachel gets pregnant. They move in together, but it get's very messy when feelings come up again. Joey develops feelings for Rachel and aks her to marry him (by accident) after Emma's birth, which stops a possible reunion. Although they're now just friends with a baby, their attraction is clearly visible.
The End & Future: Rachel wants to move to France with little Emma and Ross realizes he loves her. He tries to stop her at the airport, but misses her. She comes back and they reunite.

When I fell in love with them: They got me when they first kissed. It was raining and they had a big fight and then they had this amazing kiss… Flail.
Why I like them: Who doesn't like it? It's my first "big" ship and it's just a wonderful relationship. I like the whole "Geek" and "Beauty" concept and the fact that he has been in love with her for so long. They care deeply for each other and know that they will end up with each other. No other relationship the characters were in could stand up to this ship.
Best Moment: I absolutely loved the episode where Ross is Rachel's lobster. They kiss and really become a couple for the first time in this episode and it just shows perfectly, how Ross was in love with her for soo long.
Saddest Moment: Season 3, episode 16 "The one with the morning after". I actually cried the first time they broke up

Why not Nr.1? I know this is one of the super-couples, the one prototype for the on-off relationship. But for my taste, they broke them off one too many times
Miscellaneous: It's the on-off prototype

Couples Countdown TOP 5

In a mere 2 weeks we have reached the TOP 5 of my Couple's Countdown and as I have to rewrite 2 out of my top 5, because new episodes aired, this is basically a filler post, looking back over the last 20 (or rather 21) couples.

Here they are again, neatly from 25 to 6:

Nr.25: Sabrina & Harvey (LINK)
Nr.24: Becky & Jesse (LINK)
Nr.23: Summer & Seth (LINK)
Nr.22: Lynette & Tom (LINK)
Nr.21: Phoebe & Cole (LINK)
Nr.20: Phoebe & Mike (LINK)
Nr.19: Susan & Mike (LINK)
Nr.18: Marissa & Ryan (LINK)
Nr.17: Jordan & Dr.Cox (LINK)
Nr.16: Grace & Will (LINK)
Nr.15: Angela & Jack (LINK)
Nr.14: Gabrielle & Carlos (LINK)
Nr.13B: Piper & Leo (LINK)
Nr.13A: Blair & Chuck (LINK)
Nr.12: Elliot & JD (LINK)
Nr.11: Fran & Maxwell (LINK)
Nr.10: Carrie & Mr.Big (LINK)
Nr.9: Carla & Turk (LINK)
Nr.8: Christina & Burke (LINK)
Nr.7: Izzie & Alex (LINK)
Nr.6: Christina & Owen (LINK)
Of course, most of my favourite shows are already there, some of them more than once.
Desperate Housewives (3), Bones (1), Grey's Anatomy (3) and Scrubs (3) are all mentioned, but there are still some couples from that show that are missing. And one show hasn't made an appearance yet. Who will it be?
We also encountered some couples from shows that have already ended, but there are still so many good memories about them, that I enjoyed writing about them again. Of course Friends (1), but also Full House (1), Sabrina, the teenage witch (1), Sex and the City (1), The Nanny (1), The OC (2), Will & Grace (1) and Charmed (2) and there are still two major couples from this category.
We also had a last-minute contestant from Gossip Girl (1), which is my new addiction/guilty pleasure. This reminds me of some couples that didn't get in here, as for example Chuck and Ned from "Pushing Daisies" (who I totally forgot), any couple from Private Practice (who I forgot, too, but I love Addison and Pete or Cooper and Violet) or Nate and Serena from "Gossip Girl" (who I don't ship that much). Maybe I'll do another Couples Countdown in the next Summer hiatus, but this one is supposed to be about couples that melted my icy heart ;)
There's really not much else to say, except that it was absolutely hell to rank the last five couples as I love them so much and they are sometimes one of the main reasons I watch the show. These five couples are of course subject to change and tehy will change next season, I'm sure. But nontheless, four of them will remain in the top 5 if nothing major happens. The fifth one is a new one, so I hope it will stay there, but who knows what show I will watch next...
Enjoy the TOP 5!!!

Couples Countdown Nr.20

Phoebe & Mike
(Friends)

Current status: Married.
The Beginning: Phoebe and Joey decide to set each other up on blind dates and Joey, who forgot, introduces her to the next stranger, Mike.
Course of the Relationship: At first, Phoebe is mad at both Joey and Mike, but when she meets Mike again, they hook up and become a happy couple. But when they want to move in together, they disagree over their future (Mike doesn't want to get married) and break up. Although they can't keep their hands off each other, they stay apart. When an old boyfriend, Phoebe's first love, proposes to her in Barbados, Monica convinces Mike to propose, too. Phoebe doesn't accept either proposal but she gets back together with Mike. On their first anniversary they get engaged, after they both proposed to each other but failed.
The End & Future: Phoebe and Mike get married in a wonderful ceremony in the snow and in the finale, they decide that they want children of their own.

When I fell in love with them: I think it was right at the beginning, after Joey introduced him to her and I somehow knew that this was going to be a great couple.
Why I like them: Mike is absolutely right for Phoebe: Phoebe's crazy and wild, Mike is rather quiet and always tries to bring Phoebe back down to earth: They complete each other perfectly, plus they are very cute. And I like that he's the one for Phoebe who has had her share of bad relationships.
Best Moment: I just loved their wedding: It was romantic, kind of weird (like Phoebe) and the episode where they couldn't keep their hands off one another although they wanted to split up.
Saddest Moment: I hated it when they broke up so soon after they got together because it was very clear that they were meant to be together. It mad me sad that they were still torn towards each other and couldn't keep their hands off one another but still they stayed apart.

Why Nr.20? I like them but on the other hand I liked Phoebe and "the scientist guy", too and always felt that maybe they should have ended up together.
Miscellaneous: An often forgotten couple, overshadowed by the whole Ross&Rachel, Monica &Chandler hype.

How I started to watch Friends

Most of the time when you watch a show, there's some kind of special way you got to watching it in the first place. I have almost never met someone who has been watching a show from the first episode on and has been a fan ever since. Instead there are funny little stories how you started watching a certain show. In this little series of blogs titled "How is started to watch..." I want to tell you my stories in a random order.

This week I'm going to tell you how I started to watch Friends and how this show has affected my life and my future profession.

It's the dark year of 1999 and a 9-year-old girl is watching a show called "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch". It's her favourite show and pretty much the only one she watches. It airs at 6.30 pm and sometimes she starts watching a little earlier: And what's that? Six people drinking coffee all the time, talking really fast and some of them even kiss. How scandalous!
Two years later I'm (You get that I'm the little girl, right? ;))standing in a DVD store and thinking about which DVD I could buy, you know, just for fun. The selection isn't very big, because - let's face it - it's 2001 and so I inevitable buy Friends - The Complete Season 1. I start watching (in German) and it's really funny, although a little bit 90's. So I get the second season. And the third one.

After that I started watching the show in English and that was one of the key moments in my TV life. The original version is sooooo much better than in any synchronised version. Some puns and jokes just can't be translated in German; the cultural background is very different and it just doesn't fit.
It's actually a pretty funny story why I started to watch them in English in the first place: I was and still am a huge Lord of the Rings fan and when I first got the Extended DVDs of "The Fellowship" Christmas 2001 I had one huge problem: A very big part of the extras wasn't subtitled - neither in German nor in English. But I really, really needed to understand what they were saying. So I rewatched and rewatched the interviews until I understood every single word. And then I thought: Maybe I'll try those DVDs I own in English, maybe I'll understand that, too.

Over the course of the next three years I bought seasons 4-9, got completely hooked and have seen most of the seasons at least 7 times. I was almost never able to catch any episodes on TV (not that I wanted to because again: The German version is horrible) except for the last 10 episodes. And I was crying in front of the TV when the last one aired.
It's mainly because of this show I started to get interested in the English language (and in sitcoms or good drama shows), got better grades in school in English and decided to major in English. And of course it's my all-time favourite comedy-show and I really love those characters. So this show will always have a special place in my heart and on my DVD shelf.
