And it was an awesome episode: Warm, funny, enjoyable, interesting - the whole package. I absolutely loved every bit of it and it was a great starter for a wonderful season.
After last season's finale, many wondered what the hell happened: Was Booth dreaming or was it something else? What had Brennan's book to do with it? Did his "Who are you?" mean he has amnesya now?
All of this got explained in the season premiere: Apparently, Brennan was reading her book to Booth and he was in a coma, processing this information, dreaming that he was married to Brennan and that she was pregnant. After Booth woke up, he still thought that Brennan was his wife. Shocked, Brennan left for Guatemala for six weeks, while Booth recovered from his sugery (and is still recovering).
Now, they are back to work and discover twelve bodies under a fountain - with the help of a psychic. This psychic, wonderfully played by Cyndi Lauper, does not only know a lot about dead bodies, but also about Booth and Brennan. Throughout the episode, she talks with both of them and analyzes their complicated relationship.
The case was pretty interesting: The twelve bodies found were members of a cult called the "Harbingers". The psychic - and her sister - also used to be a member but she decided to quit. At first, she's a suspect but the investigation soon turns to the doctor of the Harbingers, who gave them meds. Brennan goes to the doctor alone, at night and the doctor tries to kill him. Booth can save her at the last minute and kills the doctor, protecting Brennan.
It then turns out that the main suspect is the founder of the cult who lives under a false name now. They have to get DNA material from him to proove that he is the murderer, but eventually they can't prove the murder, only some other crimes. They settle for the second best.
This is also the case in their relationship. The whole episode is about Booth and his feelings. As he is in recovery, he doesn't know which of his feelings are from the brain surgery and which are real. He tells Cam that he is in love with Brennan and she answers that he better be sure. Cam and the psychic are essentially of the same opinion: Brennan is a very sensible person and if Booth tells her he loves her and doesn't mean it, it will break her heart. Therefore, he isn't sure and when he tells her he loves her, he says that it is in a platonic way. Brennan, who seems genuinely surprised says I love you too, in a platonic way. They both settle for the second-best: A very good friendship. But there is also the possibility that there could be more.
Best part: The psychic gives us hope: "It will all work out eventually" she says, meaning they will get together, yippie.
All in all, it was a very good episode and it was so good to see the team back together. Cindy Lauper did a good job as the psychic and the Brennan-Booth relationship made a tiny step forward. A good start; I'm looking forward to season 5.
Best Moment: Booth saves Brennan from being killed by a crazy doctor and then cradles her in his arms and kisses her head. (BTW: This scene was the much talked about kiss, which didn't happen. I read it in a script somewhere; guess it was just a ruse after all.)
Weirdest (Funny) Moment: Booth, still suffering from brain damage, ís "ambushed" by a clown - and instead of shooting it, he laughs. Laughed so hard.
Favourite Quote:
Bones: "What did you want to tell me?"
Booth: "That I love you ... in a professional and 'attagirl' kind of way."
Bones: "Attagirl kind of way? Right back at you, Booth. I love you too! Attaboy."
