Okay, let's talk about the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy. Somehow I wasn't in the mood on Friday and Saturday so I only watched it now. I don't know what it was this time, maybe the whole backstage drama, but I wasn't expecting a lot. But it was an enjoyable albeit sad episode.
It started seconds after George and Izzie coded and as many people already know, George didn't make it. He was declared braindead, whereas Izzie could be revived again. And I don't know if it's just me, but his death could have been a sadder moment. I know they were all shocked and not knowing what to do, but the only one really sad was Callie. And then of course Izzie, who was told by Alex that George didn't make it. The other ones went through the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance; each at their own speed. But the main characters weren't the only ones who went through those stages: A young girl, on a roadtrip, lost a leg and function in her arms and the mother of a boy in pain also had to cope with her grief when no one could find out what was wrong with her child.
The whole episode covered a period of 40 days and dealt with grief, but also new hope.
Owen and Christina: Not unexpectedly, Christina grieved least - or at least showed little of it. Instead, she was working on her relationship with Owen. His therapist recommended not sleeping with each other before they hadn't dealt with the strangling incident. And so, Christina tried to prove they were past it. I loved those two in this episode. They were funny, charming, romantic and tragic. Their talk in the therapist's office was so real and honest, it was fantastic. (Kudos to the actors, btw.) And the little moment when he was desperate cuz he was afraid he could hurt her and she said "You can sleep in the bathtub". Their relationship is so great and - in contrast to the whole Burke-Christina thing - open, honest and romantic. I love them.
Meredith and Derek: The newly-weds (are post-it weddings even legal?) are coping with sex - a lot of sex. Meredith knows she's substituting grief with sex, but she still does. And she can't cry. Again, as with her mother, she can't deal with her grief the normal way and therefore seems normal from the outside. Derek has other problems: The board tries to replace Richard and Derek is supposed to be chief. But he tells Richard and expects him to do something. But the Chief does something completely unexpected.
Izzie and Alex: Izzie was devastated, but ironically she was getting better and better. I loved the scene at the funeral when she was laughing because it's all so absurd. Oh Izzie, it's a TV show, it's supposed to be absurd ;) Well, her main problem was that Alex was afraid to "consumate" the marriage. The most horrible scene was when Izzie tried to talk to Alex about it and he said that it was very seductive that she missed George. I was literally shocked that he could be so cold. But there was a bigger problem: He was afraid to touch her because she died in his arms and she forbade him to revive her. There are so many problems there and they'll have to deal with that in the next year.
Mark and Lexie: Lexie was also not as sad as you might think (didn't she love him at some point?) but she was thinking that she was a bad friend. Maybe a little bit. Meanwhile, she was worried about Mark who moved in next to Callie. She confronted Callie (who was changing in front of him and talking with him while he showered) and that was absolutely hilarious ("How gay are you?" teeheehee). In the end, Lexie moved in with him.
Callie, Arizona, Bailey: Callie was devastated and then angry, especially when the Chief told her that she wouldn't become an attending. She quit and went to work at Mercy West. She and Arizona are currently alright and finally a real couple. And Bailey? She was completely shocked and admitted to Derek that she got too close to her interns. Poor Bailey, shocked and sad, it was heartbreaking.
The end: After finally sleeping with Owen, Christina realized that George is dead. When someone cleaned George's locker, Meredith was finally able cry and was consoled by Derek (Sweet scene). Izzie and Alex were fighting and couldn't even kiss because he's so afraid to touch her. In the last scene, the chief announced that Seattle Grace and Mercy West were merging and all of their jobs were at stake. Everyone was shocked and scared.
All in all, it was a great episode and a wonderful beginning for the new season. Saying goodbye to George was hard, but it was necessary. It was heartbreaking, but funny at times and good things happened for all of the couples. Can't wait to see if they all make it through the season.
Best Moment: Every moment with Owen and Christina and the montage of all of them grieving in their own way.
Weirdest Moment: Izzie laughing at the funeral. It was great and weird and everything in between. Oh and Callie crying on Mark's shoulder while he was checking out real estate.
Favourite Quote:
Meredith: "You're laughing? "
Alex: "She's laughing. "
Izzie: "George is dead! He's dead! They're about to put him in the ground and the priest is doing classic rock lyrics! And that girl, that redhead, is crying harder than his mother and she never even met him! "
Cristina: "You are far more twisted than I ever realized."
