I've just returned from a girls' night out and from (finally) watching the new Sex and the City Movie. I had tried to stay away from reviews or spoilers for this one and I don't regret this decision. The only things I knew where that they were going to Abu Dhabi, that Carrie was angry over some TV in the bedroom and that Aidan would appear. Other than that, I knew nothing and especially I knew nothing of the bad reviews the film has been getting. Okay, I heard some rumours that it might not be that good, but all in all, I was pretty innocent.
That said, I had personal fears and feelings about another Sex and the City Movie. I really liked the first movie (so much in fact that I became a full-fledged SatC Fan, read also HERE) and I liked the way it ended: Carrie and Big got married in a simple ceremony, Charlotte finally got her baby, Miranda reconciled with Steve and Samantha returned to her old ways which was most fitting as a steady relationship is just not her. So, what was there left to do in a second film? I was scared they'd pop my happy Big-and-Carrie bubble with some nonsense or that it would be just awful and not funny. But au contraire: It was very funny and enjoyable. No matter what the critics say.
And I even have a somewhat controversial opinion: I almost liked it better than the first film. Why? Well, the first film was a really nice way to bring us back in the world of Sex and the City and tie up some lose ends. I mean, their happy endings were just that, but I wanted to see more. But on the other side, it was also a little bit of a downer. Carrie and Big broke up (some very hear-breaking scenes ensued), Steve cheated on Miranda and there was generally a lot of angst. Some may argue that this film had - in contrast to the second one - at least a plot. And they're right, the new one doesn't have much of a plot, or only a small one, but who cares?
Honestly, I know that the show has episodes that are dark and twisty and have a good plot. But there are also episodes that are purely there for fun. A lot of Season 1 episodes come to mind, and also later episodes were fun. I know SatC is kind of a drama, but it's also fun. And I think the second film ties in nicely with this fun episodes
Overglorifying the show doesn't help either. I have read in some reviews that it always had intricate plots and sophisticated women and bla bla bla. Of course they had that or else I wouldn't have watched it. But there were also episodes about literally nothing (Season 1's "Dry Spell" comes to mind and the whole pimple thing) and storylines that lacked (Petrovski, anyone?). Eventually, it is a smart show about women but it's also about the everyday problems we have.
And the new movie deals with this problems. Some people will say it's boring or contrived to fight about a TV in the bedroom (Big and Carrie), talk about the way your opinion of your job can change (Miranda) or being annoyed by your kids (Charlotte). But I call it just life. And that's what this show is about: The lives of these four fabulous women. They have had their happily ever afters and now they have to deal with what comes after it: Normality. I think there are still too few shows that deal with that and I think the movie dealt with it in a fun way.
Fun is a good word to summarize the movie. I had fun watching it and the whole room full of other movie-goers also had fun watching it. I was laughing very hard at some scenes and all in all just had fun. And this another reason I liked the film. What's wrong with having a little fun? After the sometimes sad plot of the first one, we got funny scenes, romantic scenes (lot of Big and Carrie ones, too), fashion, sex, great locations, sexy men. What's wrong with that? Noone can seriously expect me to believe that he went to see this movie because he or she thought that he would get an intricate, dramatic plot. That's good for some episodes, but the movie has to be marketable for all audiences. And I don't have anything against having some light fun at a chick-flick and see that complicated dramatic plot some time later.
Okay, I admit it, furthermore, I'm happy they didn't screw up one of my favourite on-screen couples and this may attribute to my overall positive review of the movie. But I still had fun, enjoyed it and don't regret seeing it. I can live with this as the ending to my beloved show. Or not and they do another, third, movie. I think I would be okay with that too, as long as it's not a sequel and ties everything up in a nice little bow. But I can sleep well knowing this is where the Sex and the City Universe ends. And nothing will change that
Current Mood: Happy
P.S.: I will recap it in detail after I have watched it in English as I attended a German showing tonight and it wouldn't really make sense to recap it when I don't know the exact English quotes. So, some time later.
